Smart home compatibility glossary

Learn the terms that change a compatibility answer, then return to the exact product record.

Core terms

Matter controller

The platform-side device or software that commissions and controls supported Matter endpoints. It is not automatically a Thread border router.

Thread border router

A node that routes between a Thread mesh and the home IP network. A plain Thread radio may lack this role.

Matter bridge

A device that presents selected non-Matter children as Matter endpoints. Exposed features depend on its firmware and endpoint mapping.

Commissioner

The phone or controller initiating a secure Matter addition. Commissioning access does not equal ongoing platform feature support.

Matter fabric

A secure administrative domain for Matter devices. Multi-Admin can give an accessory membership in more than one fabric.

Endpoint

A logical device function exposed to a controller. A bridge may export only certain endpoints from a physical child.

mDNS

Local network discovery used by some pairing flows. Network isolation or blocked multicast can make a device appear missing.

VLAN

A network segment. Separating phone, controller and accessory can interrupt discovery unless the network is configured for it.

Multi-Admin

Matter sharing across controllers. An already paired accessory generally needs a newly generated sharing code from its current administrator.

US SKU

A saleable US product variant. A marketing family or international product page alone does not prove a particular US electrical or radio configuration.
