Zigbee compatibility and setup requirements

Zigbee describes a specific connection layer, not a blanket guarantee that two products will pair.

What it does

A low-power mesh radio ecosystem with a coordinator or hub. A Matter bridge can expose selected Zigbee children.

A Zigbee child normally joins a compatible Zigbee coordinator first. A Matter bridge can later translate selected endpoints to a separate controller, but that export is a product-specific claim. A shared radio frequency with Thread does not give two devices a common network or security domain.

Common mistake

Do not assume

Zigbee devices do not pair directly to a Matter controller merely because both use 802.15.4 radios.

A concrete model example

An Aqara Zigbee child can join a supported Aqara hub, but the hub may export only some endpoints through Matter to another platform. Internal pairing and external exposure need separate evidence.
