Wi-Fi compatibility and setup requirements

Wi-Fi describes a specific connection layer, not a blanket guarantee that two products will pair.

What it does

A local IP transport used by many smart-home devices and Matter products. Some devices require a 2.4 GHz network.

Find the supported band and security mode on the exact product page. A 2.4 GHz-only plug can be hard to commission when phone, hub and device are isolated across guest networks or VLANs. On a Matter Wi-Fi path, a Thread border router is not needed for that transport, but a supported Matter controller still is.

Common mistake

Do not assume

Sharing Wi-Fi does not guarantee platform support, local control or Thread capability.

A concrete model example

A 2.4 GHz-only plug may need local discovery during setup. A guest network or VLAN can isolate the phone from the device even though both can reach the internet.
