Matter describes a specific connection layer, not a blanket guarantee that two products will pair.
What it does
An application protocol for supported smart home device types over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread. Bluetooth LE is commonly used during commissioning.
A useful Matter check asks which device type and endpoint the product exposes, which software version the controller supports, and whether the connection runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. A bridge can present a legacy child as Matter without making the child itself a native Matter device. Multi-Admin sharing adds another controller fabric but does not copy every vendor feature.
Common mistake
Do not assume
A Matter badge does not promise every device type or advanced feature in every app.
A concrete model example
Tapo P125M has a documented Matter-over-Wi-Fi route, while Tapo P125 is separately documented through HomeKit. The nearly identical names lead to different setup instructions.
