Apple HomeKit compatibility and setup requirements

Apple HomeKit describes a specific connection layer, not a blanket guarantee that two products will pair.

What it does

Apple’s accessory framework and pairing path. A HomeKit code is different from a Matter setup code.

The code and app path identify the framework, but product generation matters. Some older HomeKit products have no native Matter firmware, while a newer model with a similar name may. Remote access and automations have home-hub requirements independent of simple local pairing.

Common mistake

Do not assume

A HomeKit-only generation should not be labeled native Matter without separate evidence.

A concrete model example

Tapo P125 is listed for Apple HomeKit, while P125M is the Matter-listed sibling. A HomeKit setup code should not be assumed to follow the Matter Multi-Admin process.
