Start with devices that do not require permanent wiring: appropriately rated smart plugs, portable lights and removable sensors. Check lease terms before replacing locks, switches or thermostats, and preserve any original hardware.

Compare the important conditions

Choose one ecosystem first. Match the exact plug or sensor transport to its controller. A Thread sensor may require a border router; a Zigbee child may require its vendor hub before it appears through Matter. Check whether the device’s US plug and load rating match the intended appliance.
